Hot water

Here we are, early August, and there are literally no chinook or coho coming through the Strait yet. Odd? Yes. Scary? Yes!
I've run fishing trips out of Sekiu nearly every day since July 1, and I can personally attest to the fact that "something bad" is happening out there... With the exception of just a couple of days, I've noticed the sea temperature is anywhere from 4 to 8 degrees above normal, there are no baitfish to be found, and the salmon are incredibly scarce. Since May, I've noticed a disturbing lack of normal species, as well: absolutely no skates have been seen, and halibut were mighty scarce all spring and early summer.
Why? No one really knows, although this might be a good starting point. Whatever is happening, it's most certainly "bad."
